Sara Beckel CLD – Owner Family First Doula Service
CAPPA Certified Labour/ CAPPA Trained Postpartum Doula
Postpartum Progress- Warrior Mom® Ambassador
My name is Sara Beckel. I became a CAPPA (Childbirth And Postpartum Professional Association) trained Doula in 2009 and this past December (2015) completed my certification. I became a mother to my two beautiful girls in 2011 and 2013 and now own Family First Doula Service here in Regina. My goal is to provide families with easy access to education and support when it comes to their upcoming birth. This is the most profound and life-changing experience a woman will ever go through. I work hard to build a strong, trusting relationship with each family, especially the mother, during the prenatal period.
This time enables me to fully understand their goals and enables me to seamlessly meet a mother’s needs during her labour and to help her achieve her goals. I strongly believe in a woman’s ability to birth and love working with new mothers as they start to prepare themselves for the journey ahead.
I assist with gathering the right information that expectant mothers need to find their own strength and to feel powerful in their choices. Above all, I provide hands-on support so the mom-to-be can focus solely on the labour process and bringing her new baby into the world. I love to help create a calm, relaxing environment for the mother as well as the father (or partner) as this is their birth experience too. I hope that everyone involved can walk away with the most positive experience possible.
It is a great honour when I am chosen to be present at someone’s birth. That being said, I have also developed a strong passion for the postpartum work that I do. My aim is to provide the best possible continuous care for your entire family unit, which extends past labour and within your home once your new baby has arrived. I help keep your household running by taking care of the basics including meals, laundry, light house cleaning, baby basics, breastfeeding support, and sibling care.
Having the help from a Postpartum Doula during those early weeks allows you to get the rest you need to start physically recovering from the birth and gives you much needed time to reflect and process the birth experience itself. This time also helps to create the space needed to focus on getting to know your newborn baby and establishing a strong bond, meanwhile knowing your family, especially younger siblings, are well taken care of as you gently adjust to life as a brand new mother.
I am passionate about raising awareness about Post Partum Depression (PPD)/Anxiety and maternal mental health in general. In June of 2014, I organized Regina’s first Climb Out Of The Darkness event, which raised funds for an amazing non-profit organization called Postpartum Progress – an excellent online resource for women who are struggling with mental health after a new baby. PPD is something that affects one in five new mothers. I hope to help build this into an annual event in Regina to which help educate new families in the community about reducing the risk factors by meeting a new mothers most basic needs and educating mothers about where they can find help in our community.
I would love to hear from you and look forward to being a part of your Birth Support Team!
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or would like to set something up.
“Sara is a knowledgeable doula who has a passion for helping women have the best birth experience possible. She was there for me to listen to what I wanted from her services and what I wanted for my birth experience. She talked me through my concerns about birth and delivery based on my previous experience in order to be able to start fresh with my second birth and delivery. Sara was able to help me through a decision making process of how long to stay at home and when to go to the hospital. This allowed me to labour at home for most of time, only arriving at the hospital for the final stages of labour before delivery. I felt grateful that Sara’s knowledge and experience allowed me to have a peaceful birthing experience at home with my husband before my baby arrived. She also helped me find relaxation strategies that worked for me to assist me in managing the contractions which led to me giving birth without an epidural.” – Tara
